It’s that time again. You sit down at your computer—but you’re not sure what to write. What do you have in common with a kid halfway across the globe? How can you create a connection? Ugh. You don’t have time for this. You tell yourself you’ll come back to it later. But when?
Writing to your sponsored child doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, sometimes we hold ourselves to higher standards than the kids expect. They just want to hear from you—to know someone is thinking about them and praying for them. If you’re not sure how to get started, here are a few tips for writing a letter to your child:
1. Set Aside 10 Minutes
You don’t need to write a novel to your sponsored child. Even one or two paragraphs is enough—which means you can write the entire thing by simply reserving ten minutes of your day. Using the new Sponsor Portal, you can type your letter and upload photos from the comfort of your couch. It really is that easy! Plan ahead so you don’t have an excuse to avoid it.
2. Pick a Simple Topic
You might not have much in common with a kid on the other side of the world—but there are a few universal topics that you can use to make a connection. Ask your child about friends, hobbies, classes, or sports—and share about some of your own favorites. View our Communications Guidelines to help you know what is ok to write about.
3. Ask Questions
Show your sponsored child you’re interested in his or her life by asking about details. What does she want to be when she grows up? What does he do for fun? What is the weather like in her country? Ask simple questions that allow for concrete answers.
4. Include a Bible Verse
What is the life verse you’ve chosen for yourself or your kids? Share it with your sponsored child—and describe why it’s your favorite. Then ask about his or her favorite Bible verse. It’s a great point of connection.
5. Draw a Picture/Send a Photo
Your letter doesn’t have to be all words! Children love to see drawings or photos of your family, pets, or house. You can even get your kids involved and have them draw a picture for your sponsored child, too. On your Sponsor Portal you can upload images…simply scan your drawings or select a photo and upload!
Your letters to your sponsored child won’t be graded or judged—they’ll be read and loved. Don’t let your initial hesitation or external distractions keep you from investing in your child. Simply write whatever is on your heart or mind! Your child will love it!
